Melissa – The BAM Athletica Portable Wooden Slant Board is the best calf stretcher I have ever used. My husband and I have owned a boxing gym since 1994, and we’re now both in our mid-50s. We’re both trainers and train hard ourselves almost every day, and we’ve had several lower leg injuries and conditions over the years. Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis (the worst!) calf injuries, etc. So we are always stretching our calves, because we’ve healed these injuries, and don’t want them to return. We’ve done the hanging your heels off the edge of a step calf stretch (we use the edge of our boxing ring too), and we have the ProStretch Foot Rocker. We preferred hanging our heels off a step, it just felt more controlled that way. The foot rocker is okay, it does the job but it feels like there is just too much play in the angle, and you can’t tell if you’re getting the same degree of stretch you did the day before. I also didn’t like the way it bent my toes back, that didn’t feel good to me. The BAM Athletica Portable Wooden Slant Board is so much better than anything else. I like the four fixed angles, so you can get the exact same degree of stretch every time, and chart your progress. You can also make micro-adjustments to the angle in each fixed position by leaning a little forward or back, and switch the stretch from the upper-calf gastrocnemius to the lower-calf soleus by slowly bending the knees. This stretcher is built like a tank, it feels extremely strong and solid. The non-skid surface keeps your feet securely in place, I have used it both barefoot and with shoes, and it is amazing. It feels wonderful just to stand on it, I have it at home instead of at our gym because I like to use it when I’m standing at the counter prepping meals or just stand on it for several minutes while watching TV. It’s actually encouraging me to stretch my calves more! It has floor protectors on the bottom and folds flat for storage. The wood finish is also quite sleek and attractive, so it looks nice in our home with our other wood furniture. My husband just healed his chronic plantar fasciitis and heel pain that went on for over a year by following Sean Schniederjan’s protocol religiously, every single day from his book, “Plantar Fasciitis Self Muscle-Screen.” It basically involves strengthening your anterior tibialis and stretching the crap out of your calves. It really works! Get yourself this BAM Athletica Slant Board and a Tib bar, and know that there is hope. You just have to diligently put in a few minutes of work a day, and even if you don’t get relief for several weeks, don’t give up! Tendons and ligaments have a limited blood supply and can take a long time to heal. You are correcting an imbalance, and your body needs time to adapt. It was at least 2-3 months before my husband felt significant improvement, and now he’s back to running. This slant board is worth every penny because relief from chronic pain is priceless!
